I read an article recently which said that these days it’s not so much about work-life balance as it is about work-life blend. To this end, I finally caved in three weeks ago and had my work email synced to my personal smartphone after 10 months on the job.
I did it because I was working on more projects with people in different timezones. And if I don’t reply to something urgent from someone located in the UK or US during my after-work hours, it would mean them not being able to give me the stuff I need to work on the next day. Such is life.
Thank goodness I have an unlimited data plan, cos the company sure isn’t going to pay my phone bill.
I guess this is what’s called work-life blend; that constant umbilical attachment to work. The trick, I suppose, is learning how to manage this blend so that it still leaves your mind and person time to switch off every now and then. And as I type this sentence on my smartphone on a Saturday morning on my way to a hike, an envelope icon indicating work email has just appeared on the top left corner of my phone. Now, do I read that email or not? Hmm…
