I’m amazed. Amazed at the outpouring of love and grief shown by Singaporeans for Mr Lee Kuan Yew. Watching the scenes of Singaporeans queueing for hours (up to 8 hours!) in the heat to pay their respects to Mr Lee is extremely touching. Truly, as some people interviewed have said, what’s a few hours compared to 50 years?

People – young, old, pregnant, disabled, famous, the average Joe, Chinese, Indian, Malay, Eurasian etc – weeping and grieving openly for one man says a lot about the lives he has touched. I, too, have found my eyes watering as I read the reports and watch the videos of the news coverage of the life and times of Mr Lee and Singaporeans in mourning. I doubt we’ll ever see such scenes in Singapore ever again. At least not in my life time.

It’s heartening to see restaurants and hotels offering free water to people in the queue. A florist has been giving away white flowers to Singaporeans who are paying their respects to Mr Lee. Stories like these show that Singaporeans are capable of coming together as one. To say I’m incredibly moved is an understatement. If there really is an after-life, I hope Mr and Mrs Lee are able to witness this.

I’m so proud of my fellow Singaporeans.
