the different morsels of the life of a foodie

Just Text

Due to some screw-up with my blog’s webhost after it switched servers, I’m currently unable to post pictures – and I have several from my trip! – so the blog’s going to look pretty boring with just text at the moment. I hope to be able to put up pictures of my Scandinavian trip soon as the sights in that part of the world were so beautiful!

Anyway, I have been keeping up with the news and commentary on the pulping of two children’s books by Singapore’s National Library Board because a small group of people had written in to complain that the contents of those books defied “community norms” and were not “pro-family” as one book was about two male penguins taking care of a baby penguin and the other was about two women adopting a child.

I’m angry, sad and disappointed that the library decided to pulp the books to pander to the wishes of a group of narrow-minded folks. I’m sick and tired of these self-appointed moral vigilantes imposing their beliefs on others. All this talk about protecting children is bullshit; it just perpetuates the myth that a family is defined by a father, mother, and a child(ren). Other forms of family are not acknowledged and worse, even discriminated against by a group of self-righteous bigots. So these people would rather a child have abusive, heterosexual (their definition of “normal” and “pro-family”) parents than be in a loving family with two dads/mums?

Instead of teaching children to be respectful of diversity, parents and others who support the pulping of the books are encouraging the raising of bigots in society. This group of people seems to want to live in this bubble, pretending that this world is like Disneyland where everything is fairytale-perfect. Well, I’m sorry the world ain’t Disneyland nor some Frozen cartoon, and the sooner the young of Singapore learn that the better, lest they make a fool of themselves in front of others, just like how Singapore is making headlines around the world for all the wrong reasons because of this saga!
