New Superstar

Album Cover

*Drumroll*

Introducing the DSD's new single! I swear that's an actual MTV and album cover ok. Done by professionals no less! We had to choose a popstar name for ourselves. I just went for JHo à la JLo. Haha. Corny...but I couldn't be bothered to think. I must really give thanks to these professionals who made me look so cool on that cover. Haha.

Well ok, I didn't really release any single or anything. It was this arts event called Insomnia48 that was going on at The Arts House (the old Parliament House) which I checked out with a friend, N, on Friday night. The event kicked off at 8pm and lasted all the way till Sunday 8pm. There was a series of performances, dance, singing, installation, films, drawings, video, photography, basically anything to do with the arts, going on for 48 hours. Hence the name of the event.

Different groups of artistes were there and it was a really interesting event. There really should be more of such events in Singapore! Anyway, there was this one station where participants get to choose a song composed by the people from this company. We could choose from Obscure Song, Happy Song, Sad Song, Angry Song, Love Duet.

N went for Obscure and I went for Happy. So we were first made to listen to the song to get a feel of the tune. We were given the lyrics too. After listening to it a few times, we were ushered in to a makeshift recording studio, one at a time.

After that, we went to get 'styled'. That just meant letting the people slap on some crazy looking makeup and putting on some costume. I had bright pink eyeshadow put around my eyes, glitter put on the sides of my eyes, wax in my hair, and wore a pink retro dress. N was also dressed in a retro style. It was a hoot!

We had to stand in front of a green screen, face the camera and then the camera starting rolling. You could pretty much do your own thing. N was really good. She's a natural performer!

Me, being the camera shy one, couldn't even make it to the end of the song! I just didn't know how to move! I felt so stupid in front of the camera. I was laughing and smiling goofily all the while. Thank goodness the song was supposed to be Happy Song and so all the laughing and smiling kinda fitted the theme. Haha. But halfway into the song, I gave up. I went "Cut! Cut! Cut!" There were so many other people (strangers!!!) looking in as well! I was rather mortified.

I was asked if I wanted another go, but I declined. It would have been the same outcome. I'm just not a natural performer, and taking this step to be in front of the camera is already a huge step for me who's normally kinda shy! Turns out that at the end of the night, only a total of 18 people had a go at it. (We found this out after we went to collect our MTV at 3am!) So maybe I'm quite brave after all. Haha. It was good fun though, and I'm glad I did it.

After that, my friend and I went on to view other exhibits and performances. We also watched this Thai film called "The Adventures of Iron Pussy" (sounds so much like a porn flick!) about this transvestite superheroine. A bit like a Thai Austin Powers, but just a lot less funny and extremely corny. I didn't like it at all. In fact I was so bored I actually fell asleep at certain points.

At the event, N and I were mentally ticking off all the gay men we saw. I think 90% of the men there were gay. Like why are we not surprised??? Among the male species, only they are cultured enough to go for such things.

After the film ended at 12midnight, both of us then headed to Blue Note, a pub just a short walk away, to join other friends for drinks. One of our friends was performing a gig there so we went to lend our support.

She gave a lovely rendition of five songs--Our Love is Here to Stay, What a Difference a Day Makes, L.O.V.E and two other jazz classics, which I can't remember. The rest of the night the group of us just chatted, downed beers, and enjoyed the music by the jazz band.

At 2.50am, N and I made our way back to The Arts House to collect our MTVs which they had burnt on VCD. Apparently they had a screening of all the videos at 2am. I'm glad I didn't go for the screening...I would have died of embarrassment! Yes, I was THAT bad....till now I've yet to view my own MTV 'cos I think I'll die laughing at myself.

When we got back to the pub to rejoin our friends, it was closing time already. We settled the bill, said our goodbyes to one another, gave farewell hugs and hopped into the taxi, heading home to our own beds.

I got home at 3.50am and fell promptly into bed after a positively fun-filled night!
