Shopping Thrills

Sometimes it's no use if you have all the money in the world but have bad fashion sense.

That thought occurred to me after I saw the wife of Mr Lee Hsien Loong (he's Singapore's Deputy Prime Minister) yesterday at Kinokoniya bookstore.

I was at Kinokoniya yesterday with monoceros browsing books. Kino is one of our fav places. We're such nerds. Haha. Anyway, it so happened that Lee Hsien Loong & family were there as well with two bodyguards for accompaniment. Dressed in a pale green polo-shirt and long navy blue pants, Mr Lee cut quite a figure with his height and many people were staring.

His wife on the other hand, dressed like some dowdy housewife. I mean, I'm sure her clothes are expensive, but they certainly didn't look it. She's very much a public figure in Singapore, what with being the CEO of the biggest government investment arm in Singapore. Case being, she should dress better and slap on some makeup before stepping out of the house. She needs a stylist.

Perhaps she should take a leaf from me, or rather my friends. Yesterday, I spent a total of $131 on 9 pieces of clothing! I've never felt so accomplished in my life! hahaha! All thanks must go to my friends Saz and Pei who helped me plough through the racks and pick out clothes with their keen fashion sense. Cheap clothes but they looked classy.

I'm so thrilled with my buys! :p

oh well... i still think clothes must first of all be COMFORTABLE... there's too much "looking-nice or smart" in Singapore if you ask me, it's pretentious.

I think one of these days, you should write a blog on your clothes (with pics of course!)

stephen: c'est impossible! Auditions only start this Saturday! heh.

tiggie: yes, i do agree that comfort is important. but that doesn't mean you have to end up looking like a sack. And it might be a tad too sweeping a statement to say that "looking nice or smart" is pretentious of Singaporeans.

victor: I might take up that suggestion!

i meant that there seemed to me to be 'too much' effort in 'looking nice or smart' and not that all "looking nice or smart Singaporeans" == pretentious....!

in any case, maybe it's just my contorted perspective.... or the lack of enthusiasm in 'looking nice or smart'...

In some point i would have to agree that some locals are just trying too hard. Basically its your inner self and confidence to bring the clothes out. Its easy 1st, look at the cutting. Choose clothes that fits to the architecture of your body.Look at what fits you best and feeling comfortable. If the clothes doesn't fit -forget it! 2nd, colour is crucial when it comes to body language. It speaks to the others but do be careful not to overdo it. You will get attention for sure! 3 colours in one outfit is just right 3rd co-ordination, refer to our bible www.style.com i can't say much. its about taste and individuality. watch and learn but censored yourself to your level. You will make mistakes, everyone does, but it doesn't take much to learn. You dont have to buy jil sander or helmut lang to look good either-that is the biggest mistakes that most people makes. Along the process, shopping is just a breeze with a well trained eye.

For those who doesn't care about self gromming, its just an excuse.Don't come complaining if you don't feel good about yourself. Have an open mind and have fun while doing it. ;-)
