Font Types

I don't know about others, but I'm very particular about the fonts I use in Word documents. I hate/abhor/detest Times New Roman which is like the default on Word. I think it's so old-fashioned and ugly a font.

Fonts are really important aren't they? They contribute to the tone and the overall feel of a book, poster, advertisement etc. It can make or break the whole look of an ad or book cover for example. Goodness knows how long it takes graphic designers to decide on the appropriate fonts!

My default setting for Word is Verdana, point 10. I much prefer this for its modern feel. It looks cleaner too. I'm quite partial to Arial as well, but still prefer Verdana as it doesn't look as stiff. For something more traditional, I go for Garamond or Book Antiqua.

So just out of curiosity, what's your default font setting on Word?

lately, i have been using Thorndale (default of star-office doc-processing prog), but i like garamond and monotype cursive at times.... i suppose when the whole document looks professional, i am quite happy to have whatever font that makes it so... takes a bit of fiddling with the style option.... i want to be able to use Latex or Lyx some day...

Ooh, I've never heard of Thorndale before, Tiggie!

I use Baskerville, which I downloaded specially after taking note of the font in several books. I'm quite a fan of Verdana and Garamond, too. I've been through a Book Antiqua phase, although sometimes I find that the characters look too squat on the page.

Times New Roman is annoying!

Love this topic. Can you tell? :-)

What are you on about ppl? :) I actually don't have a preference...coz I guess I have to use whatever is the company font! Personally though, I think I am just to lazy to use a font and so the default type is my usual one....that aside, I love the font names! Sounds like names of really cool cars: la verdana, the Garamond, Baskerville...

I've got a few font freaks in my MFA class. One of them even gets a font e-newsletter. I don't really care so much about the font I work with. I actually use Times New Roman for documents I have to distribute, but for my own stuff, I might use palatino linotype.

I once witnessed an IT techie ask out a friend via e-mail. He used wingdings. Needless to say, he was not successful.

In my office we use only Times New Roman, point 12 or 13 depending on what sort of paper we're writing. *yawn*

However, I still prefer a nice sans-serif font for my websites: Arial, Verdana, or Trebuchet MS.
