Just read about this society called the Slow Food Convivium Society in Singapore whose chairman, Mr Jen Shek Voon, was interviewed in today's papers. Asked exactly what the Slow Food Movement was about, he said that the movement which was founded in Italy in 1986, "is for people to enjoy meals and tastings without a concern for time. It also believes in preserving traditional food produce and the way it has always been prepared and served".
Apparently the members meet once a month and each time they eat about six courses over four hours. Tasting events are not restricted to any particular type of cuisine, rather the society believes in enjoying the different international cuisines that are available in Singapore. Fast food like McDonald’s, Burger King and the likes is a definite no-no, and it’s something to be eaten only under dire circumstances like life-and-death situations. hee.
So basically the point of it is that people should enjoy food amidst good company and good conversation in a relaxed environment while taking all the time in the world!
I want to be their newest member!!!!

i have always taken ages to finish any meal....glad it is becoming 'acceptable'. i should be an honorary member! hahaha
food should really be savoured and enjoyed in a good company. to actually taste the different flavours in the ingredients...all the different sensations each flavour elicit...and contemplating how the dish might actually be prepared...my golly...what a wholesome experience that few really really learn to enjoy!
Posted by: tiggie at February 1, 2004 8:35 PMSince Des is always saying I eat so slowly, I shall join too! When I get back, of course. =) Joan, this summer, when I get back, maybe we should try stuff together again. remember the fun we had learning to rock climb?
Posted by: Van Heng at February 1, 2004 10:30 PMi think we should all be honorary members! Over the years, i've slowed down my pace of eating quite a bit. Des also says that i eat slowly now...much slower than before.
Yes Vanny! We should do something together again. I'll keep a lookout on what's there to do. Look forward to having you back in summer!
