I think I should change my name to "Joanne". I used to think that "Joan" was a very short and simple name to pronounce but not so. It seems like very few people in Singapore know the correct pronunciation of the name and more often than not I end up being called "Jo-an". Aaarrrggghh!!!! It's my No. 1 pet peeve I tell you.
What's even more bizarre is that I can go "Hi, I'm Joan" and the next thing I know the person will go "Hi Jo-an." Like hello, I just said my name is Joan.
When I am waiting in line for something, say at the doctor's, I'll usually be called Jo-an Ho. I normally just respond to it 'cos it's usually me they're calling.
These days, I don't bother to correct people unless I'm going to see them again. It's too troublesome to do so.
What's going on here???? I swear it's a conspiracy against the name Joan!

Everyone in Hong Kong thinks I am either George or John. That's unless you are South Asian and might even think I am Joy. Is it something about the way I speak?
