My Favourite Eats

For the past couple of days, I have been catching up with friends to say goodbye and just enjoying my last few days in Sydney. I went to a couple of beaches and last night I watched the Lion King musical at the Capitol Theatre. The musical was a visual extravaganza with all the colourful costumes and the beautiful puppetry. The storyline however was nothing to boot about, though really, whoever watches the Lion King for its story??? But I did enjoy myself.

Anyway, it's just two more days to go before I leave Sydney. And how could I possibly leave Sydney without first making a list of my favourite eats here? So here they are in no particular order of preference:

1) Stephen Baker A chic-looking bakery along Glebe Point road selling delicious scones, biscuits and a whole assortment of French cakes and pastries all at reasonable prices.

2) East Ocean restaurant in Chinatown for the very yummy and great variety of dimsum. My favourite place for yumcha. Plus the place's just been renovated.

3) Kam Fook restaurant in Chatswood also for their dimsum

4) Hannahs Pies a little stall along Harris St near the Powerhouse Museum. My favourites the chicken pie topped with mashed peas.

5) I dont know the name of this one, but its a small eatery in Burlington Shopping Centre in Chinatown serving Taiwanese "小菜 (translated: little dishes of food) for two dollars a plate. One can be stuffed for just $5 a bargain by Sydneys standards. My favourite xiao chai is the sauted eggplant. A definite must-eat for eggplant fans.

6) Shimbashi Soba at Woolloomoolloo Wharf for their handmade soba

7) Gelatissimo outlets for their gelato which literally screams out at you on a hot day

8) Gloria Jeans banana bread its a tad expensive at $3.00 per slice but I must say its good. Moist and full of banana. I read a review of it in the Good Food section of the Sydney Morning Herald and decided I had to try it after the favourable write-up.

9) Patthisons Bakery for all the cakes, pastries and everything they have there. So far, I only know of two outlets. One in Hornsbys Westfield and the other in a street not far from St Ives Shopping Centre.

10) Bay Swiss cafes food

11) The moussaka served at the caf on the ground floor of Building 10 of UTS. Thats my facultys building.

12) The delicious grilled chicken wrap at the cafeteria of Ultimo TAFE. Its a healthy bite and it's $3.50 for half a wrap, but that half was more than enough to fill my stomach.

13) Passionflowers black sesame ice-cream

14) The Polo Bun at St. Honores bakery a very dinghy-looking Chinese bakery tucked in a corner of Chinatown. But everyone goes there to buy the bread.

15) The caf in the church at Paddington the lasagne and vegie lentil burger there are good.

16) Kernels creamy creamy caramel popcorn very fattening, I knowbut who cares???

17)Superbowls special Fujian Fried Rice

Indeed! That's why it's my paradise amongst other reasons! :)

You've done really well with your food-hunting exploits, Joan. So well, in fact, that I have to thank you for showing me around my own city and helping me become acquainted with the local cuisine! (The Taiwanese place, in particular, is a real find. I haven't been so full and spent only $5.50 in *years*.)
