First Foray

I was so hungry after a whole day of weeding yesterday that when it came to dinner, I could eat a cow. Adrian, Joe & I met up in the city and we ate at a Chinese eatery in Chinatown. The food was delicious! Adrian says I should draw up this food map of Sydney 'cos I've been sourcing out all these good food on my own. heehee.

After dinner and dessert we headed to Mezz Bar where Adrian's friend, Stephen was having, in Adrian's words, a "birthday-celebration-cum-Asian-dance-party-extravaganza". Joe and I sat in a corner to people watch while Adrian went around saying hello to his friends. We gave the title of Fashion Diaster of the Night to a guy who was wearing a very ugly blue shirt with awful prints. Joe reckoned a guy in a red and white stripped shirt was good-looking but I didn't think so. He just reminded me of a candy striper. Sorry Joe, but I think our tastes differ on that!

However we did come to an agreement that Stephen deserves full marks for his well-toned arms. Stephen, if you're reading this, let this compliment be my birthday gift to you. ;p

We didn't stay long at Stephen's party and headed towards Oxford Street instead. Oxford Street's the gay district of Sydney and very close to the city. We wanted to go to this club called Midnight Shift 'cos we wanted to watch the show performed by this drag queen called Courtney Act. Adrian and I were looking forward to watching Courtney perform as we both loved her when she was a contestant in Australian Idol. Yes, it's quite embarrassing to admit, but we're both avid followers of the show!

Anyway, as things would have it, I was turned away at the door!!! Seems that all the gay bars and clubs have adopted a no open-toe shoes policy because of legal reasons. Joe's friend Grace, tried to smuggle me in as her friend, but there was no way of escaping those eagle-eyed bouncers. So it was a no-go. I felt bad for disappointing Joe & Adrian. Both of them were trying to think of places where I could get shoes. At one point, we thought of mugging somebody. Adrian even called his friends at the party and asked if any of the girls could swap shoes with me. But too bad, everyone was a size 6 and i'm a size 7! I felt so embarrassed....but the whole situation was actually kinda funny. It could only happen to me.

But we couldn't leave Oxford Street just like that. We decided to try a bar called the Colombian. Thanks to Joe, Adrian, Grace and another of Grace's friend, I managed to sneak into the bar 'cos the four of them flanked me and huddled close to me as we entered the bar.

So that marked my first foray into a gay bar. That was one place where I definitely didn't have to live in fear of being molested or groped. There were quite a number of good-looking men but that's just too bad for me isn't it? Fatigue must have numbed my brains 'cos I didn't seem to go into shock when I saw two men french kissing.

It was quite an eye-opening experience for me. Pretty interesting I must say, especially since I've always been so straight-laced!

It was a fun night! Three people who don't drink alcohol, rarely if ever club, and know nothing about these weird anti-open toe policies, walk into a bar...it sounds like the beginning of a joke, doesn't it? Hey, you forgot to mention our impromptu launch into singing 80's pop music! ;-) Posted by: Adrian at November 10, 2003 9:47 AM
Thank you for your attendance and kind words, Joan! Was nice to meet you, albeit briefly. Posted by: -Stephen- at November 10, 2003 4:43 PM
Joan you really impressed me with your readiness to try new things. Adrian impressed me with his ability to think calmly in a crisis and black sesame icecream impressed me with its exquisite taste and texture. Other things which impressed me have already been mentioned . I agree that the striped shirt was bad but you have to look past the superficial to the only slightly less superficial! Then again, since you referred to his stripped (sic) shirt maybe your subconscious already was ;) Posted by: joe at November 10, 2003 8:00 PM
oh! i didn't realise my spelling mistake! haha. Yes, i suppose my subconscious was already peeling away at the layers. ;p Posted by: joan at November 10, 2003 10:02 PM
