The funniest thing happened today - I was asked by my student at TAFE if I would like to be matchmade to a guy!
I usually don't go to TAFE on Tuesdays but I had gone today 'cos I wanted to see my teacher about something. I didn't get to see him 'cos he was in a meeting but I sat in on the class which was taken by a relief teacher. Anyhow, before class started I was chatting with one of my students and she was asking me why don't I stay on in Australia? So I explained to her that it's difficult to obtain PR 'cos Australia doesn't need any more ESL teachers. (We were chatting in Mandarin 'cos she's from Shanghai)
I had mentioned a few weeks ago that the only way to stay is to marry an Australian. Haha. They all told me to find a "nice Australian boy" and I had jokingly asked them to introduce one to me. And it's as if she suddenly remembered that, and she starts telling me that her mother's friend's son is an eligible bachelor and would I be interested????
She started by asking me for my age, and she started getting all excited saying that this guy's 29 years old, born in China but has been living in Australia since he was a kid. He's doing a PhD in computer or some IT stuff, and working at the same time. Apparently, he's so caught up with his work that he has no time to meet girls and his mum's worried. His mum has asked her friends to keep a lookout for any nice "xiao gu niang" (that's chinese for "little maiden") for her son. Apparently, the mum said it doesn't matter which country the girl is from as long as she's cultured and is here in Australia to seek an education and not for other dodgy reasons whatsoever. So really, I should feel flattered. Haha.
My student goes on to tell me that his mum has already bought a house for him, everything's planned. He's the only son and has 4 older sisters. She said he listens to his mum a lot etcetc....probably a typical mummy's boy....that's the last thing I need!
And when I told her I'm going back to Singapore because my visa won't allow me to stay much longer, she said it's ok - once I get married I'll be able to stay! *Faint*
Anyway, it was all very amusing. Imagine if I had to tell my children I met their father in this way????!!!!! I said thanks but no thanks. :)

That was really funny! But it was sweet of your student, nonetheless.

Posted by: joe at October 15, 2003 8:46 AMCute story!
Joan, if you do decide to find a husband here, you do realize that Joe and I will have to approve of him, hold auditions on your behalf, and make sure he's beyond reproach, don't you? ;-)
Posted by: Adrian at October 15, 2003 8:52 PMoh yes of course, i can't have anything less than the approval of the both of you. I'll leave it to you guys to be my quality control. ;p
