My New Student

Close friends of mine will probably laugh their heads off if/when they read this ('cos they know I'm not fantastic with children!). I have taken on a 7-year-old as a student. Her name is Amiko and she's a really sweet & pretty girl. Her mum's Japanese and her Dad's Australian. I met Amiko's mum at the church where I now go to every Monday morning to observe the free English classes they conduct there. After the class last week, Amiko's mum approached me and asked if I teach children. I'm not trained to do so, but I thought why not just take it up and see what's it like teaching children.

Amiko's mum wants her to practise speaking in English more as Amiko does not get enough practice in her daily life. She goes to Sydney Japanese School and even at home she speaks Japanese. Her father speaks to her in English but she answers in Japanese. Children are very smart. They know whether or not their parents can understand them. Amiko's father happens to speak and understand Japanese.

Anyhow, my first lesson with her went ok I guess. But the poor girl was rather tired as she had just returned from school. I really have to practise talking to children. It's a whole new ballgame altogether!

Wish me luck in the following lessons.

I was interested in Joan's article. We have had Asian students over some years, for short homestays and have a young Japanese student as our guest early Sept.
I would love to have the opportunity to teach English to a young child. I am in Sydney and work internationally from home.

Hi Annette,

I don't think I know you, but I saw that you left a comment on my blog.
Thanks for surfing by and I'm just wondering how you got to my blog.
It's rare that someone I don't know actually surfs by and much more leave
a comment!

Are you a teacher? I'm studying at UTS at the moment for a GradDip in
Language Teaching in TESOL.

Look forward to hearing more from you!
